Summer is on the horizon and so is a brand-new season of creativity at Lakeside Arts. From powerful performances to family-friendly adventures, our May–August programme is packed with moments designed to inspire, surprise and delight. Here’s your first look at what’s coming up.
As always, we’ve brought together an inspiring mix of UK and international artists, companies and creators to offer a lively, varied season of exhibitions, music, theatre, dance and family events. Here’s a taste of what’s coming up — and don’t forget to explore the full programme in our What’s On listings or pick up a brochure during your next visit.
🎶 A dynamic season opener — plus more music to enjoy
We begin in style with two award‑winning UK companies at the top of their game: the bold and brilliant Manchester Collective and the acclaimed dance‑theatre duo Thick & Tight. On Wednesday 6 May, they present Papillons, an evening blending live contemporary music, dance and multimedia art. Expect an immersive performance that feels both fresh and unforgettable.
We’re also thrilled to welcome writer, pianist, composer and presenter Neil Brand on Thursday 18 June. With over 30 years’ experience accompanying silent films, including regular performances at the Barbican and BFI, Neil will bring the magic of the Golden Age of comedy to life — with all the warmth and wit of his live piano accompaniment.
🎭 Creative collaborations at the heart of the season
At Lakeside Arts, artistic partnerships help shape so much of what we do. This summer, we’re proud to be part of both the Nottingham Puppet Festival and the Nottingham Poetry Festival, bringing even more creativity and community into our spaces.
A standout is Meet Fred on Thursday 4 June, a darkly hilarious show by Hijinx Theatre in association with Blind Summit. Featuring a feisty two‑foot‑tall puppet who has toured over 20 countries, this celebrated production returns to the UK for its 10th anniversary — and to our stage.
For younger audiences, we’re presenting the beautifully crafted The River by Bamboozle Theatre Company. Designed especially for audiences with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities and their families, it offers a gentle, immersive experience. Catch it on Sunday 5 July, when the entire Nottingham Puppet Festival pops up across Lakeside — filling our theatre, workshop spaces and parkland with creative energy.
We’re also delighted to welcome the headliner of the Nottingham Poetry Festival, multi‑award‑winning Nigerian‑British writer Yomi Ṣode for Araá Rí (The Body Sees) on Thursday 11 June — a powerful performance exploring grief, remembrance and themes from his acclaimed debut collection Manorism.
🌈 Architects of Air return for May half-term
A firm favourite with visitors, Nottingham’s own Architects of Air return from Friday 22 to Sunday 31 May with their luminarium Timisien. These extraordinary inflatable sculptures have amazed audiences around the world for more than three decades — and stepping inside one is an experience like no other. This year, we’re offering even more ways to enjoy it, including talks and tours with inventor Alan Parkinson, a relaxed Baby & Parent Only session, Grown-ups Only session, and SEND sessions tailored for visitors with additional needs.
Alongside this, our children’s theatre, half‑term workshops and summer school ensure there’s plenty for families to enjoy. And, as always, our cafés and beautiful parkland offer the perfect spaces to relax before or after a show.
🎨 In the Gallery: Drawn Through Time
Opening Saturday 9 May in the Djanogly Gallery, our next exhibition Drawn Through Time celebrates the expressive beauty of graphite. Featuring works by Titian, Penny McCarthy, George Shaw, James Pyman and Billy Hughes, the exhibition explores themes of submersion, travel, time and the cosmos. Open until Sunday 26 July, it’s a wonderful chance to lose yourself in detailed, imaginative drawings.
We hope our summer season inspires you to try something new, discover artists you love and enjoy memorable moments with friends and family — whether you’re planning a family day out, simply looking for a spark of creativity, or would like to spend some quality time with your friends.
Booking opens Wednesday 18 March. Tickets are available online, in person and over the phone. If you’d like early access to tickets, you can find out more about becoming a Lakeside member.
