ChalleNGe's Child Friendly Creative City is a remarkable new £1.5 million programme set to transform how Nottingham youth access, enjoy and contribute to local culture and the creative arts. Learn how Lakeside Arts is involved and how it can benefit you or your young ones...

ChalleNGe’s Child Friendly Creative City initiative was launched on 18 June 2025. The Arts Council England and 22 other local partner organisations, including our organisation Lakeside Arts, have generously injected £1.5 million into this programme. It will engage children and young people, aged between 0-25, in Nottingham’s local cultural and art scene in multiple exciting ways. This aims to make our city a globally recognised UNICEF Child Friendly City, especially important considering that 48% of the population is below the age of 30. Unveiled at Primary Parliament, where Nottingham’s youngest citizens gather to shape the city’s future, this ambitious initiative will ensure that the youth’s voices are at the heart of the work.

ChalleNGe aim to achieve this through 5 major strands:

Arts and creativity are important to us because they help develop skills and imagination. You can find out things about yourself that you didn’t know before; you never know what you might be good at if you never have the chance to try new things.

Onab, Year 10 student, Junior Leadership Team, Nottingham Academy

I wouldn't be an actor without schemes like these, they are fundamental in ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Cassie Bradley, Nottingham-born actor
