Under the Surface

Djanogly Recital Hall

75 minutes (no interval)

Three generations of unique Dutch musicians come together to test the limits of jazz with music that transports audiences to an almost dreamlike new reality. Their first album Under the Surface released in 2017 has propelled them into an almost constant world tour. Everywhere they go, be it China, Africa, Indiaor Europe, people appear to recognize the folk-style language-less voice of Sanne Rambags. Their fully improvised, mesmerising concerts change according to where they areand ‘the vibes in the room’.

Dutch drummer Joost Lijbaart, guitarist Bram Stadhouders and vocalist Sanne Rambags formed Under the Surface and released their debut album in 2017. The band has just recorded their third album Miin Triuwe (My Truth) for release in autumn 2022.

Melding jazz, rock and folk elements, Rambags sings in old Dutch over the melodic lines of Stadhouders and the subtle percussion of Lijbaart. Under the Surface’s fully improvised, mesmerising concerts are an experience for both band and audience.

An extraordinary and thrilling combination. Dutch vocalist Sanne Rambags is a storyteller who balances between magic and reality." Erno Elzinga, Jazzenzo, reviewing Under the Surface, 2017

Adventurous, experimental – out on a limb even – it’s all grist to their mill." The Cambridge Critique
