The Amsterdam-based Dudok Quartet is joined by guest artist, cellist Pieter Wispelwey to perform Schubert's great C major String Quintet. Last performed at Lakeside in 2009, Schubert’s sublime masterpiece – completed six weeks before his death – is spirited and emotionally wide ranging.
The concert opens with music from Elizabethan England with a selection from John Dowland’s ‘Lachrimae’ or ‘tears’, slow pieces with variations on a theme. The moving slow movement from Bruckner’s String Quintet completes the programme.
Dowland Lachrimae, or Seven Teares à 5 P. 15 (transcr. Dudok Quartet)
Bruckner Adagio from String Quintet in F major WAB112
