A lunchtime talk connected to the Country Lives: Exploring the English Countryside from 1800 exhibition.

In this talk David Matless, Professor of Cultural Geography at the University of Nottingham, will explore the representation of the English countryside in the 20th century, showing how the depiction of rural landscape was also held to say something about England as a country.

20th-century images of English rural work and leisure illustrate issues of culture and politics which continue to shape country lives in the 21st century.

Photograph of a mural depicting farming activities. It shows a man leaning on a tractor with fields of hay and cows in the background; the foreground shows a farm cart, milk churn etc. The artwork decorated the inside of the baffle walls protecting university buildings during the Second World War. It was painted by students of the evacuated Goldsmiths College, under the tuition of the artist and teacher Evelyn Gibbs. This may be the only surviving record, as the walls were taken down after the war.
