Winner of a Lustrum Award at Edinburgh Fringe 2023, BIRD is a bold, contemporary dance piece exploring trauma, stigma, and survival.

BIRD  is the stage sequel to Amina Khayyam Dance Company’s critically acclaimed dance film ‘Catch The Bird Who Won’t Fly’. BIRD opens with a striking silent scream – connected to the experiences of domestic violence survivors – conveying a feeling of being trapped.

The piece was sparked by a quiet, powerful question at a women’s community group: “What happens to women who run away from domestic abuse?” The nervousness in the woman’s voice inspired this searing performance, an emphatic kathak influenced piece exploring the social stigma for women in such a situation.

This high-energy evening features specially commissioned live music score by Jonathan Mayer (with an adaptation of John Marc Gowan’s sequence from Slut), joined by Debasish Mukherjee on tabla and Iain McHugh on cello.

BIRD gives voice to those navigating fear, isolation, and the courage of starting again.

The evening will begin at 7.30pm with a special curtain raiser Saheli by Manushi Dance Company.

The performance of Bird  will begin at 8.15pm, *which will be followed by a post-show Q&A.
