Since late 2023, Malaysian Nottingham-based artist Byron Mohammad Hamzah has worked as a volunteer art teacher with Malaysia's stateless youth – one of the country's most discriminated against social groups.

Despite being born in the country, these young people are denied access to many of their basic human rights, including education and healthcare, leading to illiteracy and homelessness.

Hamzah initially wanted to document the lives of those he was teaching, however as the project progressed, the students began actively engaging in the production of images. Despite the injustice they experience, The Flower & The Wall, the artist’s first solo exhibition, encapsulates the spirit of these children: resilient, full of hope and pride.

Hamzah is the 2025 winner of 3rd prize in the National Portrait Gallery’s Taylor Wessing photography prize.
