Student Summer Music Festival

Join the woodwind, brass and percussion players of the University in a celebratory concert inspired by the 75th anniversary of the death of John Philip Sousa. To accompany a selection of his finest pieces, we have two of the great American band showpieces: Frank Ticheli’s Blue Shades, in which many shades of blue (from bright blue, to dark, to dirty, to hot blue) are depicted, and Robert Russell Bennett’s evergreen Suite of Old American Dances, a celebration of the dance forms of early American life. Completing the programme is Charles Ives’s riotous Country Band March, a ‘warts and all’ depiction of a technically limited band going astray - a cheeky companion to the works of the ‘March King’!
