The noted physiognomist Johann Caspar Lavater (1741-1802) returns for one night only to reclaim his position at the centre of European culture, armed with magic lantern, silhouette apparatus and a curious tale of photographic experimentation in his Zürich cellar. Artist Simon Warner (featured in Alchemy) adopts Lavater’s persona and costume to explore the work with silhouettes and magic lanterns that established the Swiss writer and cleric as a prototype photographer. Conjuring up a just-plausible link between Lavater, Goethe and Thomas Wedgwood, the birth of photography is re-imagined through the camera-less silhouette.
