UNIVERSITY PHILHARMONIA, UNIVERSITY CHOIR & VIVA VOCE
BEETHOVEN Symphony No.3 'Eroica' MOZART Kyrie in D minor, K341 HANDEL Israel in Egypt (Part I) A concert of contrasts featuring the University’s top instrumentalists and singers. Beethoven’s heroic Third Symphony was originally composed in honour of Napoleon, but on hearing that Napoleon had declared himself emperor in 1804, Beethoven re-dedicated the work to celebrate ‘the memory of a great man’. The darker hues of Mozart’s short Kyrie lead us to Handel’s great oratorio which tells the story of the exodus of the Israelites. Part I portrays with dazzling graphic and evocative music the sufferings of the Israelites and the plagues visited upon the Egyptians. This concert takes place at St Mary's Parish Church, High Pavement, Nottingham.
