UNIVERSITY WIND ORCHESTRA & SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE
ARNOLD Little Suite No.1 FRICKER Sinfonia in Memorium Benjamin Britten SHOSTAKOVICH Festive Overture arr. Hunsberger PROKOFIEV March for a Spartakiade Op 69 No.1 BRITTEN arr. Bach Courtly Dances from ‘Gloriana’ SHOSTAKOVICH arr. de Meij Jazz Suite No.2 (excerpts) REED Russian Christmas Music The recent death of Malcolm Arnold robbed the wind and brass world of one of its greatest composers - his perennially popular Little Suite No.1 is a fitting tribute. 2006 also sees both the centenary of the birth of Dmitri Shostakovich and the 30th anniversary of the death of Benjamin Britten. In this concert we celebrate the lighter side of Shostakovich with excerpts from his Jazz Suite No.2 and the wonderful Festive Overture, together with Britten’s Courtly Dances from the coronation opera Gloriana, and Peter Racine Fricker’s rarely performed Sinfonia. Completing the programme is Alfred Reed’s Russian Christmas Music, which combines Russian carols, Eastern Orthodox chant and original material in a work of blazing splendour.
