Founded in 1968 the Fitzwilliam String Quartet originally became well known through their close personal association with Dmitri Shostakovich, who befriended them following a visit to York to hear them play. He entrusted them with the Western premières of his last three quartets, and before long they had become the first ever group to perform and record all fifteen. The two programmes the Fitzwilliams perform at Lakeside provide opportunities also to hear some well-known music by Mozart, celebrating the 250th anniversary of his birth, including the Requiem in a version for string quartet arranged by Peter Lichtenthal, a friend of Mozart’s son Karl.
