Andrew Foster-Williams is already known to Lakeside audiences for his appearances with Opera North. Most recently in a performance of Schubert’s Die Wintereise Song Cycle Hugo Wolf, one of the many half-crazed geniuses of the Viennese fin-de-siècle, produced volumes of songs during the 1880s and 90s which have scarcely ever been equalled. And although Wolf and Brahms were polar opposites, it is the privilege of osterity to juxtapose the lyric worlds of each without fear of friction. The light pastoral songs of Vaughan Williams and Keel conclude this programme. "Andrew Foster William’s rich bass-baritone was always a pleasure to listen to, resonant spoken words complimenting varied and imaginative singing". (Birmingham Post)
