Alexey Naumenko violin Anton Iliunin violin Dmitri Oussov viola Anna Gorelova cello Bartók String Quartet No. 3 Beethoven String Quartet Op. 59 No.2 in E minor Razumovsky Bartók String Quartet No. 5 Winners of the 2003 London International String Quartet Competition, this young quartet was formed in 2000 while its members were still students at the St Petersburg State Conservatory. In its short career, the quartet has won major competitions in Italy, Germany and Russia and has recorded its debut album on EMI Classics. Bartók’s single movement Third quartet has much in common with the excitement and power of Berg’s Lyric Suite. Like the Fourth quartet, the Fifth is written in arch form with the outer and inner movements relating symmetrically to one another and is infused with the rhythmic pulse of Bulgarian folk song.
