with English subtitles Dir. Kim Soyoung South Korea 2004 50 mins Within the context of 1920s and 1930s colonial Korea, the New Woman was revolutionary, arrogant, erudite and scandalous. The final film of Kim Soyoung's trilogy poetically evokes the life of Na, Hasek - one of the first New Women in Korea - and juxtaposes it with those of women in Japan and Shanghai. The result is a new kind of documentary, turning the New Woman's life into a trans-Asian and contemporary song of pain, courage and inspiration.
