Soprano Mhairi Lawson Violin/director Adrian Chandler Antonio Vivaldi: Music for the Chapel of the Pietà Some of Vivaldi’s finest works were written for the beautiful chapel of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice during the 1710s –the girls’ orphanage renowned for its music-making, where Vivaldi was employed alongside many other fine musicians, to teach and compose. Virtuosic thrills and spills are abundant in Vivaldi’ concerti, especially in the Concerto per la Solennità della S. Lingua di S. Antonio in Padova which includes a stratospheric cadenza, which Vivaldi was particularly famed for performing. The flamboyant concerti are offset by sublime and ethereal settings of the Laudate pueri and the Salve Regina, in versions for soprano and continuo, written c.1713 at the start of his four year ‘temporary’ period as choirmaster at the Pietà.
