Anon San Francisco Xavier Purcell Dido and Aeneas Maxine Braham director Jonathan Tilbrook conductor An exciting double bill of Baroque operas, one a much-loved masterpiece and the other a fascinating work composed in the same period in Colonial Latin America. Purcell's Dido and Aeneas explores the tragic consequences of the conflicting demands of love and destiny in a powerfully concentrated drama expressed through music of breathtaking intensity. San Fransisco Xavier is a rare Jesuit opera composed in the c18th by the indigenous Indians of Bolivia and is a hymn of praise to religious belief. This fully-staged European premiere features dancer Francesco Mangiacasale. Performed by a student cast and a small ensemble of some of the finest student instrumentalists, the operas are being presented as part of a University of Nottingham conference on Opera and National Identity
