David Williams conductors Nathan Truesdale Jessica Melly soprano Peter Siepmann organ Mosolov Zavod (The Iron Foundry) Harris Chorale for Organ and Brass Barber Knoxville: Summer of 1915 Shostakovich Symphony No.5 in D Minor Op.47 Mosolov’s most famous work was written to show the fruits of the labour of Soviet workers. In contrast, the rural tranquillity and serenity of colonial New England are captured wonderfully in Roy Harris’ sublime work for organ and brass. The dry heat of the turn of the century American Midwest is tenderly evoked in Samuel Barber’s Knoxville, whilst Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony is a witheringly ironic critique of life in Stalin’s Russia.
