Bawren Tavaziva’s most ambitious work to date is a sumptuous portrayal of the Carmen story and its continuing resonance today.

Performed to music composed and arranged by Fayyaz Virji of the acclaimed Warriors International, Africarmen plays out the entanglement of desire, deceit and corruption in oil-laden Equatorial Guinea.

Loosely based on Georges Bizet’s popular opera, lingering ancestral voices are at work here amongst the dreams of a better life. Bawren Tavaziva’s synthesis of ballet, contemporary and African dance makes for a powerful choreographic language that speaks loud, without talking.

Amazing, sublime, bold, daring, powerful ... a contemporary African masterpiece Afridiziak Theatre News on Tavaziva Ten
