Haydn String Quartet in D major, Op. 20 No.4 Shostakovich String Quartet No.3 in F major, Op.73 Beethoven String Quartet in D major, Op.18 No.3 The ever popular Allegri String Quartet return with a programme featuring Haydn, Shostakovich, and Beethoven. Haydn’s group of Op.20 quartets were known as the ‘Sun’ quartets, and in these works he established the large dimensions and emotional range of the form we know today. Shostakovich took advantage of the intimate forces of the quartet to write with greater musical invention and expression of ideas. According to members of the Borodin Quartet, the five movements of the imposing Third Quartet once carried programmatic subtitles connected with World War II. The programme ends with Beethoven’s genial quartet in D major.
