UNIVERSITY WIND ORCHESTRA & SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE
Conductors Kieran O’Riordan and Nick Hill Buxton Orr A John Gay Suite Nigel Hess Stephenson’s Rocket John Barnes Chance Elegy Fergal Carroll Winter Dances John Williams arr. Hunsberger Star Wars Trilogy Join the University Wind Orchestra & Brass Ensemble for a lively evening of musical contrasts. The rhythmic verve and wit of Buxton Orr's adaptation of tunes from the Beggar's Opera have made his 'John Gay Suite' a firm favourite with audiences and performers since 1973. Equally exhilarating is Nigel Hess’s tribute to one of the founders of modern travel, a light and vibrant portrait which gives way to the searing intensity of one of the finest wind compositions of recent times, John Barnes Chance’s haunting Elegy. There is just a hint of a seasonal theme in Fergal Carroll’s Winter Dances, which were recently praised as "a winter of sparkling enchantment, a delight". Finally, heroism, adventure and a little mystery are evident in Donald Hunsberger’s epic arrangement of John William’s ever-popular music from the Star Wars Trilogy.
