Jonathan Tilbrook, conductor VAUGHAN WILLIAMS An Oxford Elegy SCULTHORPE ‘Small Town’ from The Fifth Continent MOZART Symphony No.31 in D, K297 ‘Paris’ VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Three Shakespeare Songs ELGAR Three Part Songs Op.18 A summer evening concert of orchestral and choral music to mark the end of the academic year. Vaughan Williams’s An Oxford Elegy for narrator, small chorus and chamber orchestra sets two poems by Matthew Arnold evoking a nostalgic romanticism. Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe’s The Fifth Continent was inspired by DH Lawrence’s Kangaroo. ‘Small Town’ describes the country town of Thirroul south of Sydney where Lawrence resided in 1922 while writing the novel. The concert is completed with Mozart’s sparking ‘Paris’ symphony a fitting finale to end-of-year celebrations. Duration: approximately 65 minutes, no interval
