Winners of the 2011 Gramophone Record of the Year for their recording of the Dvoøák String Quartets 12 (‘American’) and 13 perform at Lakeside. Watch the video here. TCHAIKOVSKY String Quartet No.1 in D, Op.11 SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet No.7 in F sharp minor, Op.108 DVORÁK String Quartet in F Op.96 ‘American’ Tchaikovsky’s first string quartet written for a benefit concert to assist the financially struggling composer was an immediate success, particularly owing to the attractive and moving melody of the Andante based on an old Russian folk song. Shostakovich’s seventh string quartet, a memorial to his wife who died suddenly in December 1954, also includes a poignant, slow movement. The concert finishes with Dvorák’s ‘American’ String Quartet a work that has garnered universal plaudits for the Pavel Haas Quartet. The concert finishes at approximately 9.05pm. “Their account of the American Quartet belongs alongside the greatest performances on disc. In this repertoire, they are simply matchless today” Sunday Times ***** Nov 2010
