Patrick Burnett conductors Christopher Hogarth Jonathan Tilbrook MOZART Symphony No.34 in C LIADOV The Enchanted Lake LIADOV Kikimora SIBELIUS Symphony No.5 The final orchestral concert of the year begins with a joyful Mozart symphony that is replete with festive flourishes characteristic of works in the ‘triumphal’ key of C major. Anatol Liadov draws on Slavonic folk legends for his ballet music for Kikimora and The Enchanted Lake, which are nowadays heard more often in their versions as orchestral miniatures. Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony was commissioned for his 50th birthday celebration, a national holiday in Finland. Its stirring finale is particularly remembered for the glorious hymn which was said to be inspired by the sight of a flock of swans. The concert finishes at approximately 9pm
