BRIGHT LIGHTS TRIO
This final chamber concert in the Bright Lights series sees all three soloists joining forces in a trio featuring two of the best-loved works in the piano trio repertoire. Beethoven’s Trio Op. 70 No.2 dedicated to Archduke Rudolf is his grandest and the première of the piece was almost his last public performance. The D minor Trio Op.49 was often performed by Mendelssohn and is characteristically spirited and fresh in style with broad, song-like melodies. Martinu developed the hallmarks of his style early in his career and this work from 1930 shows the influence of ragtime, popular in his adopted city of Paris in the 1920s.
