THIS PERFORMANCE TOOK PLACE IN 2008 'I've grown up here now all of my life/But I dreamed someday I'd go/Where blue-eyed girls/And red guitars and/The naked rivers flow' - Brennan/Waits Mercy and Grand brings together ten songs by Tom Waits, a handful of numbers by Kurt Weill, a sea shanty, a hymn, a couple of instrumental gypsy tangos and a classic Fellini film score, all played by an incredibly versatile 'circus band' ensemble. Imagine that the Big Top has come down but the band doesn't want to go home. The music has been arranged by bass player Gavin Bryars, pianist Jim Holmes and violinist Joe Townsend (with special permission from Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan). The ensemble is completed by James Woodrow (guitar), Dai Pritchard (clarinet), Simon Allen (percussion) and Mark Bouise (accordian), and the singer is mezzo soprano Jess Walker. This is a concert that evokes the heart of Tom Waits' music and places it in the contexts of the great European and American songwriting traditions. Photo Credit: Michael O’Brien
