FITZWILLIAM STRING QUARTET
THIS PERFORMANCE TOOK PLACE IN 2008 Lucy Russell, violin Jonathan Sparey, violin Alan George, viola Heather Tuach, cello PURCELL Fantasia No.11 PURCELL Chacony in G minor VAUGHAN WILLIAMS String Quartet No.2 in A minor ELGAR Piano Quintet in A minor, Op.84 We are delighted to welcome the return of the Fitzwilliam String Quartet and Anna Tilbrook following their successful performances in the recital hall in 2006. The mood of Vaughan Williams’ film scores for Scott of the Antartic and The 49th Parallel in addition to ideas taken from his Fourth and Fifth symphonies can be recognised within the viola dominated second quartet, considered to be one of Vaughan Williams' most important chamber works. The three contrasting movements of Elgar’s Piano Quintet display moments of almost orchestral sonority at times and have established the work as a key staple in the standard chamber music repertoire. The concert finishes at approximately 9.05pm.
