THIS PERFORMANCE TOOK PLACE IN 2008 RUNNING TIME: 70 MINS WITH INTERVAL CYPHER British Indian dance company Angika present an evening of two new inspiring works that further their impressive and critically acclaimed partnerships with MTV award-winning composers Midival PunditZ and Orlando Gough, Aideen Malone (lighting design) and Gabriella Ingram (costume design). Cypher is performed by 6 female Bharatanatyam dancers who use their voices to create a vocal soundscape of traditional Sanskrit slokas (hymns). Cypher explores the multi-layered relationship between Bharatanatyam, mathematics, geometry and the idea of codes or cyphers - languages with hidden meanings. ETHER In Ether the dancers explore the contrast between energised space and nothingness. In Indian philosophy the Ether or ‘Akasa’ pervades the Universe as the invisible vehicle of life and sound. The geometrical abstraction and physical dynamics of Angika’s dance sculpts the space to evoke a sense of the intangible. “Angika prove conclusively that Asian dance has a place here and now, up there with the hippest of contemporary choreography.” -Ballet Magazine
