English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble
THIS PERFORMANCE TOOK PLACE IN 2007 The late 16th and early 17th centuries witnessed an outburst of cultural life in London, which itself was firmly established as a centre of trade, commerce, the throne and courtly life. This concert presents in musical form an impression of the huge variety of music making in the City of London. Courtly music for ceremonial occasions and music for the elaborate masques and ‘disguisings’ represent the upper social end of the spectrum. Settings of ballad tunes and country dances reveal the significance of popular music making. Songs and incidental music from plays complete the picture of this vibrant metropolis. 6.45pm pre-concert talk by Professor Julie Sanders.
