THIS PERFORMANCE TOOK PLACE IN 2007 COPLAND Appalachian Spring COPLAND Clarinet Concerto Arrangements of ‘40s and ‘50s’ standards Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, first performed in 1950, was commissioned by Benny Goodman and is an exuberant mix of jazz-inspired elements and expressive lyricism. 18-year old clarinettist Julian Bliss is one of the most exciting young artists to have emerged in recent years and his flamboyance is well-suited to the technical demands of Copland’s Concerto. In the second half of the concert Julian Bliss, with members of sinfonia ViVA, play standards from the 40s and 50s .A new piece by Nicholas Kok provides a varied programme of old and new in what promises to be a lively musical evening.
