McGoldrick, Doyle and McCusker joined on stage by Nottingham's Kate Perrey

Folk music’s legendary triumvirate of musical magpies Mike McGoldrick, John Doyle and John McCusker were back at Lakeside on Wednesday 22 February, bringing their blend of top class folk songs, tunes and charming bonhomie to Nottingham.

Masters of flute, fiddle, song and guitar they have shared stages and recording studios with everyone from Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler to Paul Weller, Joan Baez and Linda Thompson. Performing music from their recently released album, The Wishing Tree this was an evening to remember.

There was an unexpected surprise for one audience member at the concert – Nottingham’s own Kate Perrey was invited to the stage towards the end of the second half to play a tune with the band. Flautist Kate regularly attends folk music gigs at Lakeside and is well known on the local folk scene. She said afterwards:

“He’s [McGoldrick] my flute hero, I met him when I was a teenager when he taught at Folkworks summer school in Durham. He’s always been very encouraging and inclusive. He’s a legend!”

We hope all our audience members enjoyed the performance as much as we did.
