In line with the University’s response to Government Guidance, we are necessarily postponing Lakeside’s entire programme – exhibitions, workshops, talks and events – with immediate effect. This will continue for an undetermined period of time and will remain under review. More information is available here.

1 hour 40 minutes (including interval)

String Quartet, Op. 74 'Harp'*
Tippett String Quartet No.2 in F sharp
Brahms String Quartet in A minor, Op.51/2

Tippett’s second quartet, composed 1941-42 immediately following his oratorio A Child of Our Time, reveals his admiration for Beethoven in the treatment of the quartet structure and melodic lyricism. A pacifist deeply affected by the war, he conceived the sombre subject of the Quartet’s fugue at the time of the Munich crisis in 1938. An early reviewer claimed the opening melody of Brahms’s Op.51/2 Quartet ‘too tuneful’; the Quartet is indeed replete with glorious melodies culminating in a spirited homage to a Hungarian folk dance.

Lakeside Arts gratefully acknowledges support of this concert from The John Bagley Music Trust.
