Mendelssohn String Quartet No 6 in F Minor Op.80 Bach Suite for Solo Cello No.2 in D minor BWV 1008 Schubert String Quintet in C, D956
The Carducci Quartet is joined by the multi-award winning cellist Benedict loeckner making his Lakeside debut. The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s last major composition, a work imbued with anguish and sadness in response to the death of his beloved sister. Bach’s suites for solo cello are remarkable, not only as the first substantial solo works for a bass instrument but for their emotional depth. Schubert’s masterpiece, often referred to as the pinnacle of chamber music and last performed at Lakeside ten years ago, completes the programme.
