Britten String Quartet No.2
Beethoven String Quartet No.13 in B flat, Op 130
Purcell is at the heart of the first half of this programme by the Doric String Quartet. Benjamin Britten’s Second Quartet was written to honour the 250th anniversary of Purcell’s death and first performed on 21 November 1945 at the Wigmore Hall. Fittingly, the finale of the quartet is in the form of a Chacony, or ground with variations, a form that Purcell regularly used. One of the leading British ensembles of its generation, the Doric String Quartet has received enthusiastic responses from audiences and critics across the globe.
