Maxwell Davies Ojai Festival Overture
Kodály Dances of Galanta
Beethoven Symphony No.3 in E flat ‘Eroica’

The exuberant Ojai Festival Overture by Peter Maxwell Davies Opens this concert. Receiving its premiere in 1991 at the southern California music festival the work is reminiscent of the expansive, open sonorities of 20th-century American compositions. Commissioned for the 80th anniversary of the Budapest Philharmonic Society, Kodály harnesses the rhythmic energy of high-spirited gypsy folksongs from Galanta (now in Slovakia) in his Dances of Galanta. Beethoven’s Symphony No.3 ‘Eroica’ changed the symphony forever, exploding the conventions of the genre with music of previously unimaginable force, scale and expressive intensity.
