Mark Simpson After Avedon
Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time

At the age of 17, Mark Simpson became the first ever winner of both the BBC Young Musician of the Year and BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year competitions. After Avedon is Simpson’s creative reaction to the human qualities of the protagonists in four photographs by the American photographer Richard Avedon. It received an enthusiastic audience response to the world premiere in Hull in July 2017. Messiaen’s extraodinary Quartet for the End of Time written in 1941 when the composer was a prisoner of war in Stalag VIII-A camp is testament to the endurance of the human spirit.
