Beethoven Piano Trio in E flat major, Op.1 No.1
Schumann Piano Trio No.2, Op.80
Dvořák Piano Trio No.4, Op.90 'Dumky'
Founded in 1988, the Vienna Piano Trio has been performing regularly in virtually every major music venue and music festival in Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Far East for 30 years. In this concert they perform three masterworks of the chamber repertoire. Beethoven’s first piano trio published in 1795 is brilliantly witty in a Haydnesque vein and the first to add a Scherzo movement to the Trio form. Schumann’s second piano trio of 1847 is an attractive work – and in Schumann’s words has a ‘more immediate impression’ - with expressive lyrical themes, interesting canonic textures and a spirited finale. Dvořák’s Op.90 Trio is his most obviously folk-inspired chamber work comprising six movements in the style of a Slavic folksong ‘dumka’ which characteristically feature sudden changes of mood between sadness and exuberant joy.
