Szymanowski String Quartet No.2
Beethoven String Quartet in E flat, Op.127

The Allegri Quartet, in its 62nd year, is Britain's oldest chamber group. The Quartet returns to Lakeside with a programme that includes Szymanowski’s second string quartet composed in 1927 at the height of the composer’s creative development following the composition of his opera King Roger. The influence of Ravel’s Impressionism, folk idioms from the Tatra highlands in Poland and a new modernist language are all present in the rich harmonic palette. Haydn’s early string quartets of 1769 deserve to be better known; in this collection, Haydn establishes the four-movement plan and explores weightier themes alongside characteristically witty elements.
