The Origins of Nottingham
With Dr David Knight, Head of Research Trent and Peak Archaeology
Wednesday 15 November, 1pm
This lecture will focus upon the evidence for the earliest occupation of Nottingham, with particular emphasis upon the results of excavations in the Anglian and Viking settlement which is now occupied by the Lace Market. We will examine the evidence for the development of the early town defences, the street pattern
that remains fossilised in the modern townscape, and the tantalisingly slim evidence
for associated buildings, manufacture and other activities. We will conclude by considering the impact of the Norman Conquest upon the urban landscape.
