The last generation of Victorians had to face the disconcerting emergence of the modern when they might have expected just to be getting into their stride. In the case of female artists, whose position had been hard-won over the last half-century, this is as yet a more or less uninvestigated area as the question of modernity is perpetuated as 'men's business' - even though some of the women who belonged to this generation are now amongst the best-known female artists.
