THIS EXHIBITION TOOK PLACE IN 2008 Sophie Gerrard Edmund Kevill-Davies Moira Lovell Kevin Newark Dana Popa Funded by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, the Awards aim to support talented artists working with the medium of photography in the early stages of their professional life and provide a platform for some of the finest work coming out of UK degree courses over the previous three years. The work selected in 2007 displays a strong engagement with current issues, commenting boldly upon some of the most prevalent and emotive topics of our time. Dana Popa traces the tragically fractured and damaged lives of women caught up in human trafficking for prostitution within Europe whilst both Sophie Gerrard and Kevin Newark, in very different ways, address subjects concerning the impact of our waste on the environment. An element of quite humour is introduced in Edmund Kevill-Davies’ portraits of ventriloquist dummies and their owners in contrast to the uneasy pathos of Moira Lovell’s series After School in which young women dressed in nightclub ‘school disco’ attire are posed before the gates of their former schools.
