South African dancer and choreographer Vincent Mantsoe is a firm favourite with dance audiences all over the world. In 2006, for his fourth visit to the UK, he brings a spell-binding double-bill of solo work. Mantsoe’s creations are firmly rooted in his cultural and personal experiences and he has developed a unique, powerfully ritualistic cross-cultural dance style with influences from traditional African and classical forms to Tai Chi. The evening includes the UK premiere of the spiritual Ntu (Nothing) paired with the soulful ancestral journey, Phokwane, a mesmerising celebration of Mantsoe’s own heritage. Both pieces are steeped in the rhythmic sounds of traditional African music. The double-bill is complemented by a screening of the South Bank Show documentary, directed by Gerald Fox, featuring Mantsoe’s work.
