Michael Tippett: Suite in D for the Birthday of Prince Charles Ron Goodwin: Tall Ships Darius Milhaud: Suite Française Martin Ellerby: Dona Nobis Pacem Edward Gregson: Festivo This year marks the centenary of the birth of Sir Michael Tippett, a composer whose works deserve more frequent airings. His Suite in D is an enthralling piece, fusing folk songs, hymn tunes and dance forms in a multi-faceted pageant. Ellerby’s Dona Nobis Pacem, the first of two pieces commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, is a richly descriptive work, a haunting elegy for the heroes of the conflict. Milhaud’s Suite Française celebrates the strength of the human spirit in adversity through the songs of his native France. There is a little nod to the bicentennial celebrations of Nelson’s achievements at Trafalgar in Ron Goodwin’s Tall Ships, and to round off proceedings (and celebrate the composer’s 60th birthday in fine style!), Edward Gregson’s brilliant showpiece, Festivo.
