Pre concert talk 7pm: Please book in advance. An unusual and varied programme tracing the roots of popular song, from the repertory preserved in medieval French songbooks to the oral traditions of France and the British Isles. Sensual dawn songs of illicit love, touching laments for an unhappy marriage, virtuosic Scots’ mouth music, and exquisitely decorated Irish ballads are framed by lively instrumental dances from medieval and modern fiddle. ‘I’m absolutely bowled over by the simplicity and clarity of Vivien Ellis’s singing. Her voice is beautiful and true and most importantly just right for the music. And a word about Giles too. I’ve always admired his creativity as a musician but in this concert he showed us that he too has just the right voice for the music...’ Catherine Bott, BBC Radio 3 – The Early Music Show
