By Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona Fresh from global success with this significant production, Market Theatre bring The island to Lakeside for one night only. Apartheid South Africa. Two political prisoners are incarcerated on South Africa's notorious Robben Island prison preparing to perform Sophocles' Antigone for other inmates and the prison staff. This tension-filled play within a play examines the bonds and conflicts between cellmates Winston and John as they labour in the stone quarry by day and rehearse Antigone by night. The audience for The Island becomes the audience for Antigone. Nelson Mandela also staged Antigone during his 27-year imprisonment on Robben Island as a theatrical gesture of defiance.
