JO SHAPCOTT

Jo Shapcott is one of Britain’s leading poets. She’s also a frequent broadcaster, presenter, of Radio 3’s Poetry Proms, was Visiting Professor of Poetry at the University of Newcastle in 2001 and is Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Oxford Brookes University from 2003 to 2005. Her first collection, Electroplating the Baby, was awarded a Commonwealth Prize and was followed by Phrase Book and My Life Asleep which won the 1999 Forward Prize for Best Collection. In her most recent collection Tender Taxes, published by Faber & Faber in October 2001, Jo Shapcott re-imagines Rilke’s French poems, (including Les Fenêtres and Les Roses). But these are more than versions. Shapcott argues with the originals and crosses the lines between translation and origination.
