BEETHOVEN String Quartet in G, Op.18, No.2 DEBUSSY String Quartet in G minor SCHUMANN String Quartet No.3 in A, Op.41, No.3 Schumann’s three string quartets were written in 1842, ‘the year of chamber music’. Schumann never returned to writing chamber music and these works are less often heard in concert than his symphonies or song settings. The quartets owe much in style to the Viennese classical quartet, particularly that of Beethoven. An early Beethoven quartet opens the concert while completing the programme is Debussy’s only string quartet written in 1893.
