THIS PERFORMANCE TOOK PLACE IN 2007 Peter Siepmann Mark Aspinall Simon MacRae, conductors MOZART Die Entführung aus dem Serail: Overture GRIEG Peer Gynt Suite No. 2 SMETANA ‘From Bohemia’s woods and forests’ from Má vlast DVOØÁK Symphony No.6 in D The University's student run orchestra presents a concert full of nationalistic colour and dramatic virtuosity. Two masterful works bizarrely overlooked by musical history are preceded by Mozart's exhilarating overture to an opera reportedly judged to have ‘too many notes’ by Joseph II. The programme cumulates with Dvoøák's hugely powerful Sixth Symphony, a piece with clear echoes of two Teutonic giants of the nineteenth-century symphonic tradition, Beethoven and Brahms.
