Using the forensic qualities of large format photography, Anthony Hopewell explores the fugitive geography of the tidal reaches of the Thames estuary from Southend to Ramsgate. Single images concentrate on the notion of usage, focussing on the various demands of leisure, housing, industry and transport. Photographing the identical view at both high and low water, his diptychs examine the rhetoric of concealment and revelation through the exploration of the inter-tidal zone. The intention of these photographs is to arouse curiosity about areas of the coastline which are not considered "beautiful" in the traditional sense, but where the interaction of the man-made with the natural environment creates its own aesthetic.
