The First Western Atlas of China

THIS EXHIBITION TOOK PLACE IN 2008 To coincide with this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations Lakeside will be showing a selection of 15 maps recently acquired for the Manuscript Department’s Special Collection from the first Western Atlas of China and Japan. Compiled by Father Martino Martin, an Italian Jesuit who went to China as a young man, the folio was published by cartographer John Blaeu shortly after his return in 1655. Hand coloured and highlighted with gold the maps are a fascinating record of the provinces of China in the seventeenth century.
